Introduction
Encircled by scenic hills, the Government College of Engineering, Salem (GCE Salem) is the third government-established engineering college in Tamil Nadu. Since its first batch in 1966, GCE has expanded to offer 6 undergraduate and 6 postgraduate programs. Supported by World Bank funding, GCE receives ₹17.5 crores under TEQIP Phase II and ₹7.0 crores under TEQIP Phase III.
Over the past 55 years, 25,000 alumni have graduated from GCE Salem, yet the institution faced challenges in engaging this vast community effectively.
Challenges
Before implementing a dedicated alumni management platform, GCE Salem struggled with:
-
Weak alumni participation in association-launched initiatives
-
Low membership program engagement
-
Lack of formal communication channels
-
No infrastructure for online transactions
-
A large number of untraceable alumni
The college was managing alumni data manually via Excel sheets, making it difficult to maintain a unified and updated record of 25,000 alumni members.
Solution: AlmaShines Alumni Platform
On 1st July 2020, GCE Salem implemented a technology-driven alumni portal powered by AlmaShines. The objectives were to:
-
Track and update alumni information seamlessly
-
Communicate effectively with the entire alumni community
-
Plan and manage alumni events and activities
-
Boost engagement and membership participation
-
Reflect the value of membership programs
-
Integrate payment gateways for online fund collection
With the personalized AlmaShines portal, GCE Salem began integrating offline alumni data with the online platform. The college also started planning and promoting alumni activities through email campaigns and social media, while the unified payment gateways enabled quick and easy fundraising.
Key Outcomes
-
Updated Alumni Database
Added 3,447 alumni members to the database from scratch within 1 year. -
Encouraged Fundraising
Collected ₹28 Lakhs through membership enrollments and contributions. -
Organized Virtual Alumni Events

Conclusion
The AlmaShines platform allowed GCE Salem to transform its alumni engagement from a fragmented system into a centralized, automated, and interactive community. Alumni can now stay connected, participate in activities, and contribute to their alma mater effortlessly.
