About Nitte (Deemed to be University)

Nitte (Deemed to be University) grew from the Nitte Education Trust, founded in 1979 by Late Justice K.S. Hegde, a respected Supreme Court Judge and former Lok Sabha Speaker. His founding belief was simple: give rural youth access to quality education and healthcare, and they will carry that investment far beyond themselves.

That belief has held up well. Today, the Nitte group of institutions spans more than 35 campuses across Nitte, Mangalore, and Bangalore, covering health sciences, engineering, management, humanities, and vocational education. Over the decades, the university built a community of more than one lakh graduates. The question became how to keep that community genuinely connected and, more importantly, help it grow together.

The Challenge

A Large Network with No Common Space

As Nitte’s alumni base grew larger, maintaining meaningful ties with graduates became harder. There was no structured way for alumni to stay connected, promote their work, or find people who could become collaborators, clients, or mentors. The community existed in name but not yet as a working network.

The real opportunity went beyond communication. It was about genuine collaboration and commerce. Thousands of Nitte graduates had gone on to build their own businesses. They shared values, a sense of institutional identity, and an inherent trust in one another. What they lacked was a common space to act on that trust. That is the gap Nitte set out to close.

The AlmaShines Solution

Platform used: AlmaShines Alumni Management Platform, with the Alumni Business Connect module at its core.

Nitte partnered with AlmaShines to build a digital alumni ecosystem that goes well beyond newsletters and reunion invites. At the heart of this was the Alumni Business Connect module, a dedicated space where Nitte graduates could list their ventures, discover what fellow alumni were building, and reach out to one another directly.

Because the platform was institution-backed and open only to verified alumni, it carried a layer of trust that no general business directory can offer. Graduates knew they were engaging with people who had walked the same corridors, studied under the same faculty, and carried the same foundational experience forward.

What Alumni Were Able to Do

1

Showcase Their Ventures

Alumni could create rich business profiles and put their work in front of over a lakh fellow graduates who already had a reason to trust them.

2

Find the Right Collaborators

Whether looking for a co-founder, a service provider, or a distribution partner, the network made finding trusted people genuinely straightforward.

3

Build Credibility Within the Community

An institution-backed listing carries real weight. Alumni businesses gained visibility and reputation within a closed, high-trust network.

4

Support Fellow Alumni Businesses

Graduates could consciously choose to buy from, hire from, and refer businesses run by fellow Nitte alumni, creating genuine economic solidarity within the community.

What This Made Possible

A Community That Supports Itself

Alumni began actively choosing to work with, hire, and refer fellow Nitte graduates. Engagement became something that happened naturally, not because of reminders.

An Entrepreneurial Ecosystem from Within

Thousands of alumni-run ventures found their first network, their first clients, and in many cases their first collaborators right within the Nitte community.

A New Model for Alumni Relations

Nitte showed that alumni engagement does not have to stop at donations or annual events. It can be an ongoing, practical part of how graduates build their professional lives.

Sustained Participation Over Time

Because the platform offered genuine professional value, alumni kept returning. Participation was driven not by nostalgia but by real, tangible benefit.

“By closing the divide between alumni networks and real business opportunity, Nitte built something that goes far beyond a portal. They created a living ecosystem where graduates genuinely invest in one another, and where sharing the same alma mater continues to carry meaning long after graduation.”
